Every HR professional and hiring manager I spoke with — whose lives are supposedly made easier by Workday — described Workday with a sense of cosmic exasperation. "Workday does not have oversight or control of our customers' job application processes.") If candidates hate Workday, if employees hate Workday, if HR people and managers processing and assessing those candidates and employees through Workday hate Workday — if Workday is the most annoying part of so many workers' workdays — how is Workday everywhere? (Workday's "customers choose the frequency at which they conduct reviews, not Workday," said the spokesperson.) "HR software sucking" is a big tent.

With one week until the April 15 federal tax deadline, the IRS has released an "important update" for Direct File, the agency's free tax filing program. This key step has been the main issue preventing Direct File returns from being successfully filed, according to a Treasury official. But as of Monday, Direct File users can now import these verification details from the IRS, which could minimize the common error. Last week, Nvidia announced deals with Johnson & Johnson for use of generative AI in surgery, and with GE Healthcare to improve medical imaging. "Health care, whether it's biotechnology, chemicals, or drug discovery is a very powerful area." About 41 percent of biotech CEOs surveyed by EY in late 2023 said they were looking at "concrete" ways generative AI could be used for their companies. "This is very high for my experience, having been 30 years in this industry," Ural said. It also partnered in 2021 with Schrödinger for drug discovery.

It refers to the estimated future volatility of the underlying asset through a future (expiration) date. Leaving the fancy options mumbo jumbo to the side, it's just another way options traders think about the price of an option . It is because inputting volatility solves for price, or inputting price solves for volatility, that options traders tend to think of the two interchangeably. Generative AI Neural networks are the heart of the increasingly popular type of AI known as generative artificial intelligence , or gen AI for short. Both traditional AI and gen AI systems rely on data and can be used to automate decision-making tasks. Microsoft's AI virtual assistant Copilot — which went live in November — is perhaps the most prominent generative AI feature among our portfolio companies. Bias Bias is another downside to AI systems — and LLMs in particular — that users need to consider. While GPUs have the upper hand in AI training, CPUs are understood to perform AI inference well.

New York CNN —Searching for Taylor Swift on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed an error message Saturday after pornographic, AI-generated images of the singer were circulated across social media last week. X’s search function only displays results for Swift under its “Media” and “List” tabs. Inputting “Taylor Swift” with quotation marks, as well as “Taylor AND Swift” yield normal search results under all of X’s search function tabs. The search function error message does not appear on either Instagram or Reddit. Digitally manipulated pornographic images of celebrities are nothing new on the internet, and have been circulating online since the advent of software like Photoshop.

And as the user base of the platform now known as X splinters, so does Black Twitter, the community of Black users that was a big part of Twitter’s growth and culture. CNN —Round discs of barren dirt known as “fairy circles” look like rows of polka dots that can spread for miles over the ground. Fairy circles were previously spotted only in the arid lands of Southern Africa’s Namib Desert and the outback of Western Australia. The results showed 263 dryland locations where there were circular patterns similar to fairy circles in Namibia and Australia. Fairy circles’ mysterious originsThe study authors also compiled environmental data where circles were spotted, collecting evidence that might hint at what causes them to form. But the question “What shapes fairy circles?” is complex, and factors that create fairy circles may differ from site to site, the study authors reported.

"The single most important skill that everybody has pointed to is these two words: prompt engineering," Agarwal, the chief platform officer of multimillion-dollar education technology company 2U, tells CNBC Make It. Prompt engineering is essentially the skill of refining and inputting text commands for generative AI programs like ChatGPT. "How you ask for something [from a generative AI tool] is very critical," says Agarwal, the founder of online educational platform edX, which was acquired by 2U in 2021. Prompt engineering can particularly help prevent generative AI's biggest current drawback: regular occurrences of mistakes, fabricated information and other errors, all known as "hallucinations." A well-trained engineer "can stop [AI] from hallucinating by providing constraints," creating more accurate and efficient results, Agarwal says.

"Instead, I wanted this interactive lesson tool where students can express themselves and have agency — the opposite of this lecture model." With Curipod, teachers can create lessons on any school subject using generative AI, first by inputting the subject of the lesson, the grade level, and any additional learning objectives. Curipod is free for teachers and students to use at the moment, with paid tiers for school districts, said Seip. The team only launched its AI product at the beginning of this year, and had not previously sought venture capital funding. AdvertisementAdvertisementA developer has built an AI "disinformation machine" using OpenAI-powered technology like ChatGPT. They said they wanted to see AI disinformation "work in the real world," adding that "strong language competencies of large language models are perfectly suited to reading and writing fake news articles." The AI bot would then offer different examples of the same article, written in different styles and with different viewpoints. They said it would do this by "creating fake stories, fake historical events, and creating doubt in the accuracy of the original article." i am nervous about the impact AI is going to have on future elections (at least until everyone gets used to it).

Some researchers, however, are now fighting back and developing new ways to protect people’s photos and images from AI’s grasp. The prototype, dubbed PhotoGuard, puts an invisible “immunization” over images that stops AI models from being able to manipulate the picture. The aim of PhotoGuard is to protect photos that people upload online from “malicious manipulation by AI models,” Salman said. But he said he hopes that with more engineering efforts, the prototype can be turned into a larger product that can be used to protect images. While generative AI tools “allow us to do amazing stuff, it comes with huge risks,” Salman said.

The two-pronged effort, dubbed the “Paperless Processing Initiative,” aims to cut down on the millions of paper documents the IRS receives annually. Although the vast majority of taxpayers file their returns electronically, millions still send in paper returns. By next year’s filing season, taxpayers will be able to digitally file all correspondence, non-tax forms and responses to notices. This will enable up to 125 million paper documents to be sent in online every year, the agency said. Those who prefer to mail in paper returns and correspondence will continue to be able to do so.

The strange, improbable rise of Mark Zuckerberg 3.0

In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse. They were the sort of people Harvard Zuck would have scoffed at and Silicon Valley Zuck would have gently ignored.

"Certainly for younger children, for elementary age [and] preschoolers, they definitely need adult involvement navigating the digital world period, let alone a digital world which may have that much more ... inaccurate information," she adds. Even without the concern of misinformation, you should still supervise your kids' AI sessions for a simple reason, says Klein: You understand context and nuance better than machines do. Covid-era research shows that remote-learning wasn't particularly effective for younger children — and, in some ways, may have been harmful to their behavioral and learning development. "Interacting with humans is so important for children: It's how they learn to relate and to read people and to read cues. Even if the child's struggling, that kind of feedback is really important," Klein says.

Elon Musk announces a new AI company

CNN —Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the formation of a new company focused on artificial intelligence, after months of teasing plans to build a rival to ChatGPT. In an interview with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson in April, Musk said teased plans for his new AI venture. The announcement of Musk’s latest venture comes at a precarious moment for Musk. The turbulence at Twitter comes after months of Musk alienating some users and advertisers by slashing staff, pushing through controversial policy changes and making a number of incendiary remarks. In addition to Twitter, Musk runs several other companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company.
